Blackout App

Safeguarding students and eliminating digital disruption

Blackout is an innovative mobile app that helps students maintain a healthier relationship with their phones. It works by blocking access to distracting apps, including social media, games, and web browsers, during school hours. The app allows essential functions, such as calls, SMS, maps and calendars, to remain accessible, ensuring students can stay connected with their families for necessary communication. Blackout is available to download from the App Store or Google Play.

Blackout is a school supported app which temporarily disables non essential phone functions (any app which is downloaded and the camera is also disabled). The app will be activated throughout the school day from 08:20 - 14:45hrs. Students must still turn off their phones and lock them in their lockers each morning upon arrival to school for the duration of the school day and any extra curricular activities.

The app allows for additional monitoring, so students can benefit from a break from mobile devices.

FAQs

What if my daughter doesn’t have a phone?

No problem. Blackout only applies to students who bring phones to school. If your daughter opts not to bring a phone, they won’t be affected by this policy.

Does the school monitor what students do on their devices?

No. Blackout doesn’t track personal activity or store browsing history. It only manages access to apps during the school day and only collects the minimal data required for setup.

What happens if my daughter disables the app?

Disabling Blackout counts as a breach of school expectations. Staff are notified and will follow up according to the school’s policy.

What about learning apps or homework?

Blackout only runs during school hours, so students can continue to use educational apps and complete homework after school. In class, teachers will use Chromebooks only.

Can families use device control tools at home?

Yes. You are welcome to use built-in device tools (e.g. Screen Time, Focus Modes) alongside Blackout to reinforce healthy digital habits. Guidance on setup is included at the end of this pack.

What if something isn’t working correctly?

Please report any technical issues directly to the school, or consult the support section on the Blackout Education website.
