Target Setting and Student Progress

In order to track and record the progress of students, teachers assess them on a regular basis and record progress grades for every student three times per year.

Aspirational targets are set for every student based on their Reading and Mathematics scores at Key Stage 2, and where students have not been able to sit their Key Stage 2 exams due to the Covid-19 pandemic, target grades have been set based on their NFER scores. Each student is allocated a flight path which shows the expected progress from when they join the school in Year 7 through to their GCSE or BTEC exams at the end of Year 11. The grades used by our flightpaths are numbered 9-2 where 9 is the highest possible attainment and 2 the lowest. Each flightpath ends at the GCSE grade that students on that flightpath are expected to achieve.

Our flightpaths are colour coded – each student will know the colour of her flightpath. Click the link below to see an example of our flightpaths.

St Philomena’s School Flightpaths

Reports for students will show for each subject studied:

  • The current attainment grade
  • The end-of-year target (according to the flightpath)
  • A homework grade
  • An attitude to learning grade

Students starting courses in the sixth form are given targets based on their average points score at GCSE. The targets aim to achieve a top 25% performance compared to ALPS benchmarks.
