St Philomena’s started to use the G Suite for Education in 2014 with teachers starting with Google classrooms in their teaching. By 2016 our Virtual Learning Environment was commissioned and saw the launch of a Staff Google Site. By 2017 devices were purchased and teachers had embedded the use of  G suite for Education in their teaching and learning. The roll out of the Anytime, Anywhere Learning (AAL Programme) was launched and work was linked to Google and by June 2019 through our ‘story of impact’ sent to Google, we were honoured to be recognised as a Google Reference School. In recognition of our use of technology in the classroom to positively impact the education of our students.

Being a Google Reference School means we are joining a select group of schools and colleges in England. Being part of the Google Reference Schools program ensures that our use of G Suite throughout the school and our good practice in utilising its tools can be referenced and displayed to offer support to other schools. We are able to provide training opportunities for colleagues and will continue to work closely with Google in supporting the use, development and deployment of future technologies for use in all schools.

Part of the AAL strategy meant that staff have used G suite for Education, various apps to organise, collaborate and engage students in their learning.  It has been such a successful and easy way to share documents and collaborate across the school and provide opportunities for flipped learning for our students. Using G suite for education allows our students to login to a variety of devices anywhere on the school site or at home and access their work anytime.

Our rationale is for all students to have access to technology within their lessons, and for it to be used to allow students to become confident and responsible users of modern technology, promoting communication, online safety, independence, resilience, collaboration and progress through 21st century learning skills aiding them in becoming lifelong learners in this digital age.
