2023 A Level Results

 A Level 1

Dear Parents/Carers

As I'm sure you have read in the media over recent days, a decision has been made to bring the 2023 public examination outcomes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (GCSEs, AS and A level) back in line with the 2019 pre-pandemic standards, particularly pertaining to top grades.

The following from Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) Ofqual Blog provides you with further insight into the rationale behind this decision. Obviously comparing  the 2023 data with the 2019 data is not a direct comparison and one could argue it is not a fair comparison, mainly because of the following;

  • It doesn't take into account that this cohort of students never sat their GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11, KeyStage 4.  The last public examination these students sat was in Yr 6, when they completed their SATs examinations at the age of ten or eleven.  The GCSE grades awarded to this cohort were based on Teachers’ Assessments in 2021.
  • It doesn't take into account the ongoing industrial action (teaching staff and transport) that took place throughout the academic year 22/23, there was no industrial action in 2019.
  • If my memory serves me correctly, neither was there a scarlet fever/strep throat outbreak as was the case in December 2022/January 23.
  • Even more notable, the lasting and differing impact of the pandemic was not something the 2019 cohort of young people experienced or the generations before them and hopefully it will not be experienced by others, ever again. They are the first Covid cohort to experience pre pandemic grading.

In spite of the above, it gives me enormous pleasure to share with you the wonderful news relating to the class of 2023 from St Philomena’s.  The achievements of our current Year 13 students  were very pleasing with many students achieving above their target grades, due to the hard work of both students and staff alike.

I feel exceptionally proud of the achievements of this cohort, their sheer resilience, determination and hunger to achieve has meant they can embark on the next chapter of their young lives with confidence and hope in their abilities. Very well done to all the young people celebrating today, it is truly well deserved and a remarkable achievement.

The headline figures from today's results are as follows:

A Level

  • 31% of all entries were A* - A grade.
  • 62 % of all entries were A* - B grade.
  • 86% of all entries were A*- C grade.
  • 99% pass rate at A level

Four students Alice Coyle, Rose Hopkins, Gabriella Berkeley-Agyepong and Kathryn Maloney secured their place at Oxbridge, which is no mean feat given the strong competition this year. My thanks to Ms Pearce for her unwavering support and specialist guidance preparing these students. Many others secured places to begin their undergraduate studies at Russell Group universities studying a vast array of courses. Others achieved the grades needed to begin their graduate apprenticeship schemes. Some are still waiting for universities to confirm their places.

Double BTEC

  • 17% of students achieved two Distinction star grades
  • 33% of students achieved a Distinction star and a Distinction grade or higher
  • 75% of students achieved two Distinction grades or higher
  • 83% of students achieved a Distinction and a Merit grade or higher
  • 100% of students achieved a merit pass or higher

Single BTEC

  • 13% of students achieved a Distinction star grade
  • 53% of students achieved a Distinction star - Distinction grade
  • 79% of students achieved a Distinction star  - Merit grade

Our first cohort of Technical Level (T Level)  students in Year 12 received their public exam results as did many students who sat their A ’Level in their home language early, Portuguese, Russian and Polish examination grades awarded were all at A* or A grade.

Year 11 Results Day

As previously communicated please see below the arrangements for the Year 11 results day and enrolment to St Philomena’s Sixth Form.  Please note that parking is available on the field.

Collecting Results:

GCSE results will be available for collection from 8:30am - 12 noon. During the summer break, the school has been working on different building and renovation projects. Currently the Dining Hall and Quad is not in use due to building works, results will be distributed from the school Chapel.

If a student cannot collect their results on the day they have two options.

  1. If a student would like their results posted, the school would require a self addressed stamped envelope which should have been with the school by Friday 21st July 2023.
  2. If a student intends on someone else collecting their results on their behalf, a signed letter of consent would need to be provided by the student and returned to the Exams Officer, Mrs Whitehead. This should have again been received by Friday 21st July.

Enrolling for St Philomena’s Sixth Form

As you may appreciate this is a very busy morning with students enrolling into the Sixth Form. All enrolments will take place in the Marie Thérèse Hall. Please note that internal students do NOT need to bring their passport or proof of ID. All students have been given an appointment time, when they will meet with a member of staff to enrol onto their Post 16 courses which will start in September 2023. If you are unsure of your daughter’s enrollment time, please email 6thform@stphils.org.uk.

Enrolling at another Sixth Form

If it is your daughter’s intention to study at another Sixth Form establishment, or she has not applied to St Philomena’s Sixth Form and wishes to do so, please see Mrs Windley, our Sixth Form Administrator, who will be in the Marie Therese Hall. It is essential that you provide destination information to Mrs Windley or Ms Addison and complete the Google Form before you leave the site as this is required by the Local Authority.

If you are not attending on the day, please email post 16 destination information to enquiries@stphils.org.uk marked for the attention of Miss Addison.

Congratulations to all our current Year 13 students for all that has been achieved over the past two years. The whole community is extremely proud and we wish each and every one continued success as  they make preparations to embark on either a university course, apprenticeship, gap year or employment.

I hope all Year 13 students and their families take some time to celebrate all that has been achieved.  I thank God for his continued presence in their lives and I feel hopeful of the difference this generation will make in our world.

I pray that next Thursday’s results will be equally as pleasing and a source of much celebration for Year 11 as we prepare both cohorts of students for the next chapter of their young lives.

With every good wish for the remainder of the summer break.

Yours sincerely

Ms M Noone
