Sutton School Streets Scheme

From Monday 14 September 2020 Sutton Council will be trialling a ‘School Street’ scheme for six months on Shorts Road between the junction of Colston Avenue roundabout and Alma Road
These roads will be closed to motor vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times, between 8:15-9:15am and 2:15-3:15pm Monday to Friday, only during school term times.

Over two thousand children and young people attended either St Mary’s Infants, or St Mary’s Juniors school or St Philomena’s.  Sutton Council wishes to make the streets outside our school safer and the air cleaner for our students. To help achieve this, they are trialling School Streets. A School Street is a road outside the school that will be closed to motor vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Many local people have enjoyed the lower levels of traffic and improved air quality during the recent lockdown. We also know that children and young people  are among the most adversely affected by high air pollution levels. To help continue these benefits, and improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the borough, they are trialling School Streets. This scheme has been developed based on feedback from residents and aims to address:

·         Congestion and poor parking around the school.

·         Parked vehicles with their engines running, contributing to air pollution.

·         Road safety and lower traffic speeds.

The School Street aims to help make the road safer and calmer for students at school start and finish times. Parents who drive to the school will be requested to park further away.

Thank you as always for your full support and cooperation.
