Proposed Changes to the School Day - Information Evening

There will be an Information Evening for parents scheduled to be held on Monday 18th March at 6pm in the Marie Therese Hall, where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to learn more about the rationale.

The Governors, Senior Team and Staff have been working hard to review current provision. From September 2019 St Philomena’s will be changing to a new timetable which means that the timings of our school day will change slightly. It is many years since a change like this has occurred. Currently our school day comprises of seven periods of 45 minutes, and we propose to change this for a number of reasons:

  • Students are now studying reformed A level, GCSE and BTEC courses in all subjects which are more challenging than before, and therefore we have to ensure that the time students spend quality time in lessons as much as possible.
  • For many subjects, the current 45 minute lesson is a little too short for in depth learning.
  • For some of our students, the current 1 hour 30 minute ‘double’ lesson is a very long time for them to focus their attention on one subject.
  • Presently, a significant amount of time each day is spent by students moving around the school site between lessons. Each day, students can move rooms up to four times a day, and each of those moves can take five or more minutes.
  • Students studying some GCSE and BTEC subjects would benefit from more overall time in class than they are currently receiving.
  • As the school expands our morning break of 20minutes can feel very rushed, we still have two more years of the expansion (one extra class) coming through.

We are therefore proposing to change our school day to five periods of one hour lessons. In order to accommodate our entire curriculum, our timetable will be delivered on a two-week cycle, so students will have a different timetable on alternate weeks. The new student planner will inform students about which timetable they are to follow each week. Break times will be longer and lunchtime slightly shorter.

The school day will end earlier than it does now, at 3:00pm which will give students more time to attend clubs and/or twilight lessons after school and still make their journey home in a timely manner.
